Album Review: NOFX - "Double Album"

 

The follow-up to last year's Single Album (logically titled then I guess) sees Fat Mike and co return and in just as much of an uncompromising mood as ever. And, let's be honest, we wouldn't have 'em any other way.

Opener Darby Crashing Your Party (named after the infamous late Germs frontman) sees Mike looking at some of his less than advisable past exploits and half-apologising, half shrugging his shoulders in the best Stiv style nihilistic fashion before My Favourite Enemy is similarly self-critical with its brutal pummelling drums being underpinned by a surprisingly melodic tune. Don't Count On Me is similarly brutally honest ("It's not that I don't care/I just don't care very much") while packing in about five changes of pace to come up with arguably the album's highlight.

As I said at the outset, Mike and co are in an unapologetic mood here with Fuck Day Six being a brutal look at the week Mike spent in a drying out mansion that backfired and Is It Too Soon If Time Is Relative? being a cruel but sicko-funny piss-take of Stephen Hawking (written before his sad passing a few years ago). Unlike Single Album and Mike's recent Cokie the Clown solo album, this is much more upbeat in its tone (although as I mentioned earlier, it can still be brutal as feck when it wants as the dark tale of family dysfunction on Three Against Me details) but the key is that it's got the hooks, tunes and, who knew it, inventiveness to make it a good listen. A worthy companion to its predecessor and the sound of a band on a good run of form, especially for this stage in their careers.

  "If you won't love me then I'll find someone who will!"  - Soho Roses  - So Alone The Soho Roses were a classic case of right band, wrong time. If they'd broken on to the scene in the last few years then they'd have had a ready made audience on the 21st century power pop scene and probably be regulars at Some Weird Sin and similar club nights in the Smoke. They broke through towards the tail end of the '80s and got lumped in with the dying embers of the Soho glam scene, leaving behind one sadly underappreciated album and a few EP's before self-combusting. In a way, I sort of see the Roses as a British version of Enuff Z'Nuff. Sounds From The Junkshop #43 - The Yo-Yo's

  "Too much too soon is not enough..."  - The Yo-Yo's  - Keep On Keepin' On So welcome to what can best be described as Wildhearts Weekend here at Nite Songs. Tomorrow and Sunday we'll finally be carrying on with the band story wot we started way back last August by looking at the various projects the group members got up to after their messy split in 1997 as well as a little bit on their initial reunion in the early years of the millennium. This bit on the Yo-Yo's was originally meant to form part of that side projects column but after reading it through and realising that it actually expands quite a bit outside the Wildhearts story frame, I thought it was deserving of its own SFTJ entry. Plus, they were an awesome band who I used to follow quite avidly back around the turn of the millennium so they definitely deserve a full column to themselves. Album Review: The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs - "All The Covers (And More)"

  Covers albums are an odd beast and the prospect of a 40 track one would've been a cause for me to shudder in certain circumstances. However, given that the band behind this are Nite Songs faves the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, a quick cursory glance at the tracklisting will tell you that we're on safe ground. Hand on heart, quite a few of the tracks are already available on previous Cheetahs albums but it still doesn't make their takes on the Saints' Know Your Product  and the Dictators' Faster And Louder  any less fun. There's the odd mis-step in here - their speeded up take on the Dogs D'Amour's Debauchery  ends up sounding more like Queen's Stone Cold Crazy . But the good stuff here far outweighs the bad with the group teaming up with none other than Cherie Currie for a good run through the Runaways' Cherry Bomb and the group adding a much needed dose of extra urgency to Motley Crue's Livewire  to remind you that the Crue actually had a f
