Nite Songs Top 50 Albums of 2023 - Part 3 (30-21)

  30.     RISKEE & THE RIDICULE - "Platinum Statue" Grime-punks Riskee & The Ridicule continue to be one of the most fierce and uncompromising bands in Britain on their second album. Bristling with righteous anger,  Platinum Statue  is a viciously desolate howl of frustration on behalf of the youth of today which urges the downtrodden to pick up a pitchfork and take aim at those running this country into the ground before it's too late over a none-more-tight musical backing. Essential listening. *** 29.     THE MISTAKES - "A Good Hill To Die On" Hailing from Dorset, this is the fourth album by thrash-punks the Mistakes and sees them barging forward to take their place as one of the most promising bands of the genre today. Tipping its hat to Motorhead and GBH in its sound and with a lorryload of pent up anger about the state of the country in 2023, the likes of Chaos Theory , I Savage  and the title track are fine stuff indeed. The Nite Songs Singles Bar - October 2021 (Part 2)

This month has seen us having a bit of a decks-clearing exercise at Nite Songs so there's quite a bit of stuff to go through - see below for the stuff we couldn't quite cram into Part 1. Part 3, consisting of EP's and mini-albums coming later this morning. *** The prospect of a new  Riskee & The Ridicule   album in 2022 is definitely an enticing one and we've got a new three tracker  Too Young To Be Blue  (🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑) from them this month. It gets off to a slow start with lead off track Young & Beautiful  sounding a bit awkward and sluggish but the Idlesesque gammon-bashing B-side Blue Jacket  is better and a new version of previous single Backwords 2 turns out to be the strongest cut here with its righteous fury. A bit hit and miss but still well worth a listen.  Bandcamp Link A four track EP consisting of four different bands? Now there's something to get every mid-'90s indie kid who remembers the early days of Fierce Panda etc feeling...

The Nite Songs Singles Bar - April 2021

Welcome back to the Singles Bar as we look through this month's releases. A bit of a shorter than usual column this month with five singles and a mini-album to get through so let's get on with it, shall we?... Rich Ragany & The Digressions  are currently limbering up for their second album and on the evidence of  Heartbreakers Don't Try  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑), a tribute to Johnny Thunders with its lyrical references to You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory unless my ears deceive me, it should be well worth the wait. A supremely tuneful slice of Tom Petty style power-pop (two Heartbreakers for the price of one, you might say) with some driving piano courtesy of ex-Shush man and all round production wiz Andy Brook, this is good stuff. Bandcamp link here .  It's always good to see some Jesse Malin  in the review pile although the jerky blues of  The Way We Used To Roll  (🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑) isn't quite up to the standard of his previous few releases like Ameri'ka or...
