Nite Songs Top 50 Albums of 2023 - Part 1 (50-41)

Image
Okay, here we go friends, once more unto the breach... You know how this thing works now, ten albums a day from now until New Year's Eve - Bandcamp links (where we've got 'em) by clicking on the title. Let's do this. 50.=     ASH - "Race The Night" I suppose the big problem with Ash is that, for better or worse, they will always be singing over the echoes of their glory years in the late '90s and early '00s. However, Race The Night  might just be their strongest effort since Meltdown  way back in 2004 - an enjoyable slice of power-pop with the tunes and melodies of old rightly pushed back to the fore where they belong. One of the more unexpectedly enjoyable comebacks of 2023. *** 50.=     OBEY ROBOTS - "One In A Thousand" This collaboration between Laura Kidd (She Makes War/Penfriend) and guitarist Rat (Ned's Atomic Dustbin) proved to be another good addition to both of the involved parties' back catalogue. A collection of dark odes...

The Nite Songs Singles Bar - November 2021

Image
Welcome to the Singles Bar on this cold November night. Glass of mulled something for you? Well, while you mull it over, let's have a look at what's out this month shall we? Well, we kind of had to start with long time Nite Songs faves Evil Scarecrow  who are back with a bang this month complete with half a new line-up and a new single Master Of The Dojo  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗) from their forthcoming album due to see the light of day in 2022. And it's as brilliantly silly as you'd expect with some Karate Kid  inspired lyrics about kicking people in the balls to win fights over some chugging none-more-metal riffs. Expect to see audiences doing a dance routine to it much the same as they did to Robototron  and Crabulon  in recent years at a venue near you soon.  Bandcamp Link And it isn't getting any less heavy or silly around here as Geordie stoner rock bruisers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs have teamed up with Lancaster art-rock oddballs The Lovely Eggs ...

Nite Songs Best Of 2020 - Top 50 Albums Part 2 (40-31)

So here we go, part 2 of the end of year rundown as we reach the Top 40. Cue up one of the old Top of the Pops themes if it helps with the atmosphere for this bit. Anyway... 40. PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS - "Viscerals" ( Bandcamp ) Unquestionably the heaviest album on this list, it's easy to get put off Pigs x7 (as I will refer to them here to save space) by the hipster-ish name but lurking within Viscerals  is a brutally heavy guitar assault with Sabbath-heavy sludge-metal riffs on tunes like Reducer , Crazy In Blood  and Hell's Teeth  which sink their teeth into you and refuse to let go. Slightly terrifying on your first listen, oddly addictive by your fourth. *** 39. RIZ AHMED - "The Long Goodbye" ( Bandcamp ) Best known for his role in the excellent film Four Lions , The Long Goodbye  proved that Riz Ahmed is a hell of a talent as a musician as well. A furiously angry diatribe from the point of view of a British Muslim which compares his relati...
