Garbage Days Revisited #80: Oasis - "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants" (2000)

"Goin' leaving this city/Goin' drivin' outta town/And you're comin' with me/'Cos that time is always now"  - Oasis - Go Let It Out It seems to be a theme among the more successful bands we cover on both Garbage Days Revisited and Sounds From The Junkshop, right from the first SFTJ we did on Carter USM to the 100th a couple of days ago on the Darkness , that when you're at the top, the only way to go is down. And that's very much gonna be the theme of this column as we look at Oasis in the noughties or "The Aftermath Years" as they could be called. It may not be the coolest thing to admit as a Britrocker but yeah, I used to like Oasis although I was very much in a minority among the other 15-year-olds who I used to hang around with at school, most of whom were into shoegazing and grunge. I guess you could say that while 1991 and the first few months of 1992 was the year my music tastes properly started to take shape thanks to the li...

Album Review: Liam Gallagher - "C'mon You Know"

Image
The first feeling provoked by the arrival of a new album from Liam Gallagher in 2022 was probably one of confusion more than anything. After all, while Liam’s defiant snarl was arguably the driving force behind the Oasis sound and he did slowly start to become a contributor on the songwriting front as time went on with that band, it was always Noel who was justifiably regarded, for better or worse, as the main creative force behind Oasis and while Gallagher Sr has unsurprisingly  headed off on a quest to seemingly bore the entire universe to death with the unfettered tedium of his High Flying Birds project, it’s maybe not a surprise that Liam initially struggled a bit following the break-up of the band with his post-Oasis band Beady Eye with Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Chris Sharrock generally feeling like a bit less than the sum of its parts for its two-album existence. Slowly but surely though, he’s clawed his way back. His previous album, 2019’s Why Me? Why Not , was a...

The Horror! Nite Songs' 50 Worst Albums Ever Part 7 - The Top 5

Image
Here we go then, once more unto the breach, our official worst 5 albums ever (well, 7, there’s a three way tie in there). Seatbelts on, this is gonna get messy… PREVIOUSLY IN THIS COLUMN:   Intro  •  Part 1 (50-41)  •  Part 2 (40-31)  •  Part 3 (30-21)  •  Part 4 (20-16)   •  Part 5 (15-11)  • Part 6 (10-6) 5.= METALLICA - "St Anger" (2003) 5.= LOU REED - "Metal Machine Music" (1975) 5.= LOU REED & METALLICA - "Lulu" (2012) I'm grouping these three together for obvious reasons but basically all of them are deserving of a place in the Top 5. Bear with us, this might take a while. So, St Anger  then - there's few incidents that I look back on from my music journalism career and genuinely think "yeah, f**kinell I really got that wrong" but this album is one of 'em. I reviewed it for a print 'zine I was working for at the time and gave it 9/10 on the grounds that, in my own words, "they've rediscovered the riffs!" Un...
