Nite Songs

  I've opined many a time in these pages about how I'm still annoyed that Tyla and the classic Dogs line-up still can't seem to get on with each other but when it comes down to it, I'll always give the Wolverhampton Wanderer's releases the time of day around here. I think to be honest, by this point I've kind of accepted that Tyla at least seems happy enough with his current Dogs line-up. Following on from the reasonable enough Dice Clown Man  EP from a couple of months ago, Tree Bridge Cross  is the first Dogs album since 2018's In Vino Veritas (although a number of EP's have surfaced since then) and, y'know what, it's not bad. The likes of the title track and Journey To The Centre Of The Soul  are solid rockers while the lurching balladry of Stole My Love  sees Tyla teaming up with his old mate Spike and the slide guitar blues of Angel Lane  conjures up memories of the Dogs' late '80s glory days.   I have to be honest, this month's Singles Bar very nearly ended up being a EP/mini-album special - bizarrely while we've had three of those come in this month, we've really had to trawl the vaults to find some of yer regular one track efforts to make up the list. We eventually managed it though so thankfully this month's trip to the bar is good to go. Mine's a large one landlord... *** Well, at least the Speedways  have made sure it isn't a completely barren month in terms of new 45's and Shoulda Known  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑) is another confident shot from them, sounding like some sort of halfway house between early Elvis Costello and The KKK Took My Baby Away  era Ramones. B-side A Drop In The Ocean  is a bit more mid-paced with a bit of a Babys/Records style feel to it which is no bad thing either.   The original plan this month was not to have a Singles Bar as, let's face it, there's usually very little out in terms of new releases in January (as the fact that pretty much all the albums we've reviewed this month came out in November/December last year probably testifies). However, upon investigating the inboxes we did manage to find just enough stuff to merit doing a smaller-than-usual column hence this one-off Singles Mini-Bar. Feel free to help yourself... The biggest name on our review list for this month is Tyla's Dogs D'Amour   with their new "Powder Dry EP"  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑). I think most people know that Tyla is one heck of a prolific songwriter and it's led to times in recent years where it's felt a bit as if quantity has sometimes taken precedence over quality for Mr Pallas.
