Nite Songs

  Kubix Day 1 Review here And so on to Day 2 of Kubix. While yesterday was a fairly slow-paced opening day to the festival, today proves to be a lot more busy with several stage clashes. In the interest of covering as much as possible, please be aware that for quite a few of the bands I've reviewed here, I didn't catch the full set due to hot footing it to/from the other stage. But hopefully I've done this justice... It's weird how a nice sunny day (a stark contrast to yesterday which alternated between clouds and rain) can make even bands you weren't a fan of first time out seem pleasant enough and Republica , who open the Main Stage today, are a case in point. Back when I was 18, I generally found their Essex girl techno-Britpop about as much fun as root canal surgery without the anaesthetic but today they're enjoyable enough with an energy and enthusiasm to their set that means you'd have to be a bit of a miserable bugger not to enjoy it.   So here we go again. After the absolute deluge of new singles last month, thankfully June has been a little bit quieter with us back to being able to condense all the new releases into a single Singles Bar but with some pretty exciting new stuff therein. Let's take a closer peek shall we? Mine's a large one landlord... *** I guess the obvious place to start this month is with the debut single from Ginger Wildheart & The Sinners  - Ginger has been touting his new post-Wildhearts band for the best part of a year now and it's good to finally hear some music from them. Worth the wait as well as Wasted Times  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗) is a most enjoyable slice of Stonesy strut (there's a definite Honky Tonk Women  influence here) which should be more than enough to get fans of the guy eagerly anticipating the forthcoming album.   "And when they come to ethnically cleanse me, will you speak out, will you defend me?"  - Pop Will Eat Itself, Ich Bin Ein Auslander , 1994 I'll be honest, until my mid-teens, Pop Will Eat Itself were the one of those bands who I sort of knew that I should  like as all of my favourite groups at the time (Carter, the Senseless Things, the Wonder Stuff) were constantly raving about them but just never quite did it for me (see also Atomic Dustbin, Ned's). I had a couple of their singles ( X, Y And Zee  and  92 Degrees Fahrenheit  if anyone's keeping count) but for every slice of scuzzed-up indie techno anthemicness they seemed to then come out with something pretty anonymous. Until the album we're going to deal with today, of course, namely 1994's seminal Dos Dedos Mi Amigos  which well and truly won me over to their cause.
