The Nite Songs Singles Bar May 2022 (part 2)

Image
It's been a while since we last did a two-part Singles Bar and, to be honest, I was going to hold a few of the releases on the second part of this effort over until June. But eventually I decided sod it, there's some good stuff on here, let's get the word out! Anyway, enjoy... Some proper big hitters to start us off with as Killing Joke  have a new EP out in the form of Lord of Chaos  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗) and it sounds just as intimidating as you'd hope/expect with Geordie Walker's apocalyptic grinding riff, Jaz Coleman's "shaman of doom" vocals and Youth and Paul Ferguson's rock solid rhythm combining to create something pretty awesome. B-side Total is similarly ferocious while the EP is rounded off by a couple of mixes including a Youth dub one. It's good to have them back. It's always a pleasure to have some new music from Miles Hunt  to listen to here at the Singles Bar and Things Can Change  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗) featuring Laura Kidd aka Penfriend is...

Welcome to the traditional Nite Songs end of year rundown. As we did last year, we're gonna kick off today with our Top 10 EP's and mini-albums before kicking off the Top 50 countdown in earnest tomorrow. As you'll know if you've been frequenting our Singles Bar over the last 12 months, 2021 has been nothing if not a varied year as evidenced from the sheer variety of stuff making up this list from sugar-sweet power-pop to ferocious punk. Covers of Transvision Vamp, Kim Wilde, Joan Jett and the Bangles are all handled well with the melodies and hooks given a good old scuzzy glam-punk makeover to top ...

Yup, we're back in the ring for a second swi(n)g at the Singles Bar this month. We've had a few mini-albums land in the review box this week so we thought we'd use this particular column to give 'em a spin. Enjoy... *** THE SPANGLES - “Boys Just Wanna Have Fun” Featuring various off-duty members of the Idol Dead and the Main Grains, the Spangles first came to our attention a couple of years ago with the excellent SweetFA  album and this four track covers EP featuring the band turning their hand to covering various female-fronted bands they look up to. Hence Joan Jett's Bad Reputation  is turned into a glorious Ramones style thrashy singalong and Kim Wilde's Chequered Love  has a nitro rocket strapped to its back to power it through. The group also take on the Bangles' Walk Like An Egyptian  (also covered by fellow Leodensians the Eureka Machines a few years back if memory serves me correctly) and turn it into a properly enjoyable romp while their cover of ...
