Nite Songs Top 75 Albums of 2025 - Part 5 (30-21)

We're well into the top half of our albums of the year list now *** 30. THE DIVINE COMEDY - "Rainy Sunday Afternoon" Neil Hannon's first album in six years and it sees him in a more reflective mood in keeping with the times. Yet even in his more downbeat moments, the guy's skill as a songwriter can't help but shine through from the political anger of Mar-a-Lago By The Sea  to the poignant The Last Time I Saw The Old Man  and Invisible Thread . The sound of a master of his craft at work. *** 29. DU BLONDE - "Sniff More Gritty" Honestly, I'd completely missed Du Blonde prior to this year but having been introduced to their work via Sniff More Gritty , I'm definitely going to check some of the back catalogue out. Mixing icy electro with a snotty punk anger, the likes of Dollar Coffee  and Solitary Individual  are angry diatribes on the superficiality of 21st century life. A confident blast of an album which is well worth a listen. *** 28. COME...

Jump for joy, it's Top 40 time - cue Whole Lotta Love / Yellow Pearl / The Wizard /your TOTP theme of choice... *** 40.    SARAH SHOOK & THE DISARMERS - "Revelations" Another band who I discovered pretty much by accident this year, Sarah (now River) Shook and their band are now on their fourth album and if, like me, this is the first you've heard of them then listening to it will make you quickly want to make up for lost time. Mixing the winsome country strum of prime time Tom Petty with a bratty indie-pop insouciance, Revelations  mixes sugar ( Criminal , Nightingale ) and spite ( Jane Doe , You Don't Get To Tell Me ) to great effect. Give this band a listen now.  *** 39.     X - "Smoke And Fiction" If this really does turn out to be LA punk veterans X's swansong then rest assured they've gone out on a high note. A more than worthy follow-up to 2020's storming comeback Alphabetland , it sees them throwing everything from old-school pun...

The Nite Songs Singles Bar - November 2021

Image
Welcome to the Singles Bar on this cold November night. Glass of mulled something for you? Well, while you mull it over, let's have a look at what's out this month shall we? Well, we kind of had to start with long time Nite Songs faves Evil Scarecrow  who are back with a bang this month complete with half a new line-up and a new single Master Of The Dojo  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗) from their forthcoming album due to see the light of day in 2022. And it's as brilliantly silly as you'd expect with some Karate Kid  inspired lyrics about kicking people in the balls to win fights over some chugging none-more-metal riffs. Expect to see audiences doing a dance routine to it much the same as they did to Robototron  and Crabulon  in recent years at a venue near you soon.  Bandcamp Link And it isn't getting any less heavy or silly around here as Geordie stoner rock bruisers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs have teamed up with Lancaster art-rock oddballs The Lovely Eggs ...
