  Clearly even having completed his four decade quest to release an album for every letter in the alphabet hasn't stopped UK Subs frontman Charlie Harper coming up with new material. Reverse Engineering  is being touted as the band's final album but...well, I'll believe that when I see it to be honest. But the truth is that it's no fluke that the UK Subs have lasted this long - it's all very well to pay tribute to Harper's undoubted tenacity but as this album proves, they're still a band with a good knack for a spiky punk riff and shoutalong chorus as evidenced on the likes of the angry Political Alamo  and the ominous C60 Audio . In fact, I'd go so far as to say that this is the strongest Subs album for a good few years with the plundering pirate-punk of Hoist The Sail  and the stomping Big Foot  being highlights and the ominous The Night Holds The Key  and the lurching Bad Acid  showing that the band can do the odd slower more menacing number to bala...

  Welcome to the first Singles Bar of the new year - we're officially open for business again! Last month we didn't really have enough stuff to justify doing a Singles Bar but we've chucked the few things from that month along with some newies in here so hopefully there should be something to suit your taste... Anyway, a proper welcome development to start us off as we welcome The Hellacopters  back with a couple of new songs. Reap A Hurricane  (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑) is a worthy comeback from Nicke and the guys combining a pounding Stooges style riff with a soaring chorus to remind you exactly why this band were so lauded back in the day. Similarly, Eyes Of Oblivion  is a full throttle stormer powered on by Dregen's spiralling riff and a killer chorus hook. The new album is due in April and on this evidence I think we could potentially have an Album of the Year contender on our hands.   "This is where life began...and this is where it'll end..."  - UK Subs - Another Cuba I think it's one of the incontrovertible facts of punk rock that Charlie Harper is a bit of a flippin' legend. Already in his mid-thirties when the punk explosion broke in 1977 and a veteran of the pub rock and glam rock scenes with his old band the Marauders, he quickly sensed that a new movement where he genuinely felt he fit in was breaking (I remember reading an interview with him many years ago where he'd essentially said that prior to punk most people tended to refer to him as the local nutcase but that when punk came along, local nutcases were cool all of a sudden!) and thus the UK Subs were born. Forty plus years later with Harper now approaching his 80th birthday, the band are still out there and going strong having recently completed their odyssey of releasing an album for every letter of the alphabet from A to Z.
