Album Review: Iron Lizards - "Hungry For Action"
Hands up, I came across the Iron Lizards almost entirely by accident while listening to the Chuck Norris Experiment's new album (review of which coming soon on these pages) on Bandcamp when it prompted me towards them suggesting I might like them. Given that these Parisians rip through twelve tracks of breakneck garage punk in just over half an hour, I can definitely see how the old algorithm came to that conclusion.
Ultimately, Hungry For Action is nothing you won't be expecting with pounding riffs, snarled distorted vocals and a pace which will only under extreme duress consider going below "breakneck". So why is it still such an enjoyable demolition derby then? I think the key is that there's a real energy and tightness here which makes it a fun listen - the likes of the pounding Deathride and the hyperventilating Obey/Annihilate have the necessary flashy guitar solos and tight rhythm section to make them a fun listen and keep this well on the right side of enjoyable. Certainly having recently reviewed the recent Grindhouse album where the main issue was that it kind of lost focus a bit in places, that's a harder trick to pull off than you might think.
I get the impression that if the Iron Lizards had come to prominence in the late nineties or early noughties then they might well have had a chance of getting some infamy the way bands like the D4 and Winnebago Deal did. If that sounds like the sort of thing that you miss (and yeah, I'll admit, I used to be quite a big fan of both the aforementioned) then you could certainly do a lot worse than give Hungry For Action a spin.
