Album Review: MFC Chicken - "Fast Food And Broken Hearts"
Signed to London-based garage rock specialists Dirty Water records, MFC Chicken peddle a similar mix of '50s rock 'n' roll swagger and '60s garage band sensibilities to fellow capital mainstays King Salami and the Cumberland Three albeit arguably even more daft (put it this way, their previous album had a song called New Socks on it which really was about the joys of buying a new pair of socks).
Their fourth album, Fast Food and Broken Hearts, is another enjoyable guitars and sax powered rock 'n' roll with blackout ode Always Always Always and the self-explanatory KFC Called The Cops On Me getting this one off to a strong start. Along the way, they touch upon such subjects as STD's (Who Gave What To Who), dumpster diving (Fried Chicken Straight From The Trash), all you can eat breakfasts (Breakfast Taters), self-loathing (the enjoyable Fuck You, Me) and people blowing up (album highlight Spontaneously Combust).
Rocket science it very much ain’t but at least Fast Food and Broken Hearts is a good fun listen and at 14 tracks in 32 minutes it zips past agreeably fast without outstaying its welcome. If you weren’t an MFC Chicken fan before then it’s unlikely that this will change your mind suddenly but those who are fans already should find plenty to enjoy here.
As we say up here in Yorkshire, it’s alright for them that likes fun.
