Album Review: Diablogato - "Old Ghosts"

Let's be honest, if nothing else then Diablogato have come up with one of the coolest album covers of the year here. Signed to Rum Bar and hailing from (where else?) Boston, the interesting thing about opener Bayou Banshees is that, as befits its title, it sounds oddly like a garage rock Creedence Clearwater Revival. Not what I was expecting but it ain't bad. Second track Gasoline goes into almost King Kurt style psychobilly territory complete with horns while Damnation is powered along by pounding tribal drums and it becomes apparent that this is definitely gonna be a varied effort.

It keeps up the wide-ranging sound throughout as well - en route through listening to Old Ghosts you'll hear echoes of everyone from Nick Cave (Wretched Soul) through the Cramps (Paint The Devil On The Wall) to Hank Williams III (Broken Man, Old Town). It's a good mix of rock, psychobilly, cowpunk and blues which packs enough twists and turns in to keep you on your toes.

Rum Bar are certainly a label that are quickly becoming synonymous with good quality releases and with Diablogato they've unearthed another good band. Definitely one of the better releases that I've heard this month.
