Album Review: Kae Tempest - "The Line Is A Curve"

 

Kae Tempest's first album since their name change and coming out as gender neutral is maybe not something you'd expect to see in this webzine but the truth is that similar to the likes of Scroobius Pip, Riz Ahmed or Run The Jewels, quite simply I’m a fan of their music. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not what you'd call a rap or hip-hop aficionado at all but I can appreciate this sort of music when it's done well and Tempest is definitely one of those who can deliver on this front as they’ve demonstrated ever since the days of albums like Everybody Down.

Although The Line Is A Curve is a very introspective album, Tempest deserves credit for not going for what would arguably have been the easy route and write about their experiences over the last few years. There's a few tracks like These Are The Days or Water In The Rain which could be deciphered as coded references to their struggle but mostly, this is an album about finding solace in tough times - Salt Coast's references to the effect the lockdown had on a lot of us' mental health writes the manifesto in fine style. Similarly, Smoking's tale of childhood scars over minimalist backing is a genuinely unsettling listen but in a good way.

It's backed up by the lush orchestration on a lot of the tracks which gives them a gentler sound than the more ferocious stuff you might be used to Kae doing but it's a change of pace which works well. The gentle I Saw The Light featuring Grian from Fontaines DC which takes the sparseness right down to not even having any beats on it is another highlight with the gentle electronics washing over you. The gentle ode to those who are breaking their backs trying to overachieve in society, No Prizes, is another highlight as is the gentle guitar-led closer Grace, a genuinely beautiful track.

As I said at the beginning of this review, I get that this isn't the sort of music we generally don't cover a lot of here on Nite Songs but it fully deserves a review here because it's a damn good album whether you're into rap or not and proves that Tempest deserves their place as one of the most acclaimed artists of their genre. Whatever your music taste, The Line Is A Curve is well worth a listen.

  Diablofurs have previously shared a split release with the very under-rated Deadcuts (RIP) and feature at least one ex-member of semi-legendary "we were the Manics before the Manics" Coventry indie-punks Birdland so the initial omens for this release were pretty promising. Put any thoughts of the scuzzier end of early '90s alternative music out of your mind though because on this evidence, Diablofurs appear to have set their controls for a good decade earlier with a full on power-pop/new wave sound. The opening duo of Chase The Beat  and Everybody's Dreamin'  come on like Parallel Lines  era Blondie being fronted by Gary Numan and it's not an unpleasant sound at all. Album Review: Silver Sun - "Switzerland"

  Ah the memories. Silver Sun were the great should've-been band of the mid-'90s. Taking the '70s Cheap Trick style power-pop formula and giving it a liberal dose of Britrock meatiness, they should have in an ideal world coasted to Top 20 stardom in the wake of the Wildhearts and Terrorvision, both of whom they definitely owed a sly debt in their sound to (although with their own spin on the formula obviously). Instead, they were lumped in with Britpop whose retro footy shirt clad laddishness never really suited them, and when that ship went down in 1998 or so they quickly found themselves sunk. They never officially split up though and frontman James Broad has continued to put releases out under the Silver Sun name with various collaborators old and new in the 20 years since with Switzerland  being their sixth album no less. Album Review: Rossall - "The Last Glam In Town"

  John Rossall is probably best known as the musical leader of the Glitter Band way back in the '70s (for those unaware, the band actually had a whole separate music career away from their disgraced singer and chalked up a fair few hits on their own). Last Glam In Town sees him making a comeback with an impressive backing case including John Robb (Membranes/Goldblade) and various members of '80s indie stalwarts the Nightingales who comprise his backing band nowadays. If you're expecting some flat trip down Memory Lane here then prepare to be surprised - this is very much the '70s glam sound but much as Joe Elliott and the Quireboys did in their Down 'n' Outz side project, it gives the formula a much-needed 21st century makeover. Opener Fear of a Glam Planet uses Robb's sinister whispered vocals to create something that owes as much to imperial phase Marilyn Manson as it does to Marc Bolan and it's not a bad sound at all.
