Album Review: Mad Daddy - "Mad Daddy"

Aiming for the same blues-punk waters as the Jim Jones Revue did a few years back, this debut album from Manx (just to clarify, that's the Isle of Man not Manchester!) greasers Mad Daddy is one of the more unexpectedly fun releases I've heard this year. Mixing raw garage punk with some blues honking harmonica and a spot of rockabilly attitude (not to mention a bassist with the rather righteous rock 'n' roll name of Elvis Palooka), songs such as Give It To Me and Just You Wait And See are tight as you like blasts of punkabilly attitude.

The pace on this one doesn't let up throughout and this could have led to the dreaded one trick pony syndrome but the key is that Mad Daddy are simply very good at what they do, namely three minute bursts of ultra-well drilled punk attitude and the likes of Ain't Gonna Stop and Real Bad Day are pure five star petrol pedal-to-the-floor slices of urgency which you can see detonating venues up and down the country.

At their best, such as on the frenetic Ride With Me and the freewheeling I'm Bored (no relation to the Iggy classic of the same name), Mad Daddy sound like some righteous studio drinking sesh involving Dr Feelgood, Charlie Harper and Vince Taylor and there's few higher compliments than that. The only note of caution I'd sound is that while their furiously fired up sound works well over this album, you do get the feeling that they might need to move forward quite quickly next time out to avoid repeating themselves. But for now, just enjoy this band in their original ultra-raw and savage form. Good stuff.
